How do I get started

“Linux sounds cool, so how do I get started”

If you have a computer, USB drive, and internet connection, you are good to go. This guide explains how to get started with Linux. Once you have finished, you will have your own Linux USB.

Ingredients

Computer

I assume you are already using a computer, a laptop or desktop. You don’t need to overthink about the specs. Linux can run on older hardware even, as old as 10 year old hardware.

This is your “operation base” where you download Linux iso and disk burner.

USB Drive

USB drive is where your Linux .iso live. You can use it directly from the drive without affecting your computer. This is good if you are not sure about Linux yet or, you just want to explore different Linux distros.

Ventoy

Ventoy is a USB disk burner program. This program lets you use multiple Linux distros without formatting. Imagine having a garage full of cars; that is Ventoy.

Linux .iso

This is your Linux OS file. You can use any Linux OS but, for this example, I am going to use Ubuntu.

Instructions

“Do I need to code? Are there some programs need to be written?”

No, as long as you can follow the installation wizard and understand Youtube video, you can use Linux. Linux is as hard as you want to so, follow the easy path if you will.

Install Ventoy

  1. Download Ventoy file.
  2. Extract Ventoy file, right click > extract here
  3. Plug in your USB drive. Make sure it is empty with at least 8GB space.
  4. Execute Ventoy2Disk.exe, follow the installation wizard.
  5. Copy your Linux iso file into Ventoy USB

Enter BIOS

BIOS is a computer program that lets you switch operating systems. Each hardware and OS have different method to enter BIOS. Linux is straightforward. You only need to press F9 during startup.

Unfortunately, Windows is a bit difficult and I can’t give the instructions myself. So I can only link this.

Select Your OS

You have finished the installation. Now you can enter Ventoy and select your OS of choice.
