Why use Linux?

Last updated on April 23, 2025

Why Linux?

“Ok I know what Linux is, but I’d like to know why should I use it. How is Linux different?”

To understand why would anyone use Linux, we need to explain what is Free Software first.

Free Software is a software that ensures users freedom to run, learn, modify, and redistribute the software. This is the Four Freedoms as coined by Richard Stallman. He created this idea to protect digital freedom.

Linux is more than just zero cost and open source as most Linux users said. It is both Free as in freedom and free as in zero cost.

Reasons to Use Linux

Obviously Linux is free. That is enough reason for some people to  choose it (including me when I was a high school student). I will talk about Linux being “Free as in freedom though”.

Linux is Flexible

Free Software lets you to do whatever you want with your system. This means that, you could make it look as pretty as you want. You could also install many different software for you need.

Do you miss Windows and wish Linux would be more like home? Here.

Or maybe you were an Apple fan and missed Apple Docks? It is also possible!

Perhaps you are the old school Linux user who hates GUI? No need to work for that.

Not to mention there are few Linux users out there. If you like to stand out and becoming a pioneer, Linux is the right OS for you!

Join the Development

Linus is a Free Software. Being a Free Software, anyone can take part in the development. Linux does not thrive on revenue; it thrives on donations. And unlike most software which you have to worked for the company to contribute, you can volunteer to build Linux.

If you are a generous person who likes to help great causes, Linux is a great endeavor to contribute for. You can contribute other Free Software projects too.

Generally more Secure

Linux is generally more secure than Microsoft Windows because, there are not a lot of Linux malware out there. You are still advised to be cautious however.

Other than that, Linux security comes from its ability to comfortably update. If you are a Windows user, you are familiar with the long & unpleasant updates that render your computer unusable thus, it is delayed. Linux lets you update your computer as you are using it.

Moreover, Linux comes with a lot of security software. You could also tweak security settings easily. No need to code in fact.

What do you think?

“Linux is good but  it is too much bro. It’s not for me.”

Consider visiting Free Software Recommendations please. You may not be a Linux user but, you can still use Free Software.
